One of the first female staff photographers hired at National Geographic, Annie Griffiths Belt's assignments have included stories about
Jerusalem, the ancient ruins of Petra in Jordan,
England's Lake District, Lawrence of Arabia, and the
Badlands region of South Dakota. A passionate activist and conservationist, Annie collaborated with writer Barbara Kingsolver to produce Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands, which celebrates the last pristine wilderness
areas in North America. Proceeds from that book have raised more than a quarter of
a million dollars for land conservation grants.
When her children were
born, Belt took them right along on her assignments, turning what
some might see as an obstacle into an opportunity.
In a presentation based on her new National Geographic book, A Camera, Two Kids, and a Camel, she shares the story of her journey, revealing in often hilarious detail how she managed to convey two kids and a career to far-flung destinations across the globe, while offering a glimpse of the wisdom she has gained. “I have learned,” she observes, “that even without a shared language, it’s easy to let people know that their children are beautiful, their homes are lovely...and that their stories are worth sharing with the world.”
