Expedition participants celebrate their triumphs Photograph by Kathleen Jo Ryan
Right to Risk is a new film documenting the life-affirming journey of eight individuals with disabilities on the trip
of a lifetime—a raw adventure of 15 days navigating some of North America’s largest white-water rapids
down 225 miles (362 kilometers) of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Pursuing a challenge that would daunt even
skilled, able-bodied adventurers, the participants face aspects of their lives and abilities that had been largely
undiscovered, while reflecting on their everyday efforts to overcome prejudice and negativity. In the end, these
adventurers affirm that everyone has the right to choose what they are willing to do to pursue their dreams—
their “right to risk.” The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers Kathleen Jo Ryan and
John Ryan, and expedition participants Susan Yim and Daniel Deng.
