The book cover for Shades of Glory Courtesy National Geographic Books
Tracing the history of people of color in baseball from the 19th century to the time of Jackie Robinson, the new National Geographic book Shades of Glory: The Negro Leagues and the Story of African-American Baseball, produced in collaboration with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, celebrates black America’s contribution to our national pastime. Written by a team of co-authors led by principal author Lawrence B. Hogan, an expert on the history of black baseball who has curated a touring exhibit on the topic, Shades of Glory combines vivid narrative, archival photographs, and biographical essays on legendary players such as pitcher and Negro League founder Rube Foster and Homestead Grays slugger Josh Gibson. For this event, Hogan will be joined by African-American baseball luminaries, including Stanley Glenn, catcher for the Philadelphia Stars from 1944 to 1950 and the current president of the Negro League Baseball Players Association. Hall of Famer Monte Irvin, a legendary hitter who played for the Negro and major leagues, will join them.
