The Roadless Realm
Photograph by Robb Kendrick

Fleecy clouds obscure the Nangpa Glacier, which leads  to Nangpa La pass, historically an important trade route to Tibet. Hardy tourists who trek up the glacier may encounter yak caravans loaded with goods heading for the Saturday market at Namche. The Nangpai Gosum Ridge, upper left, includes Cho Oyu peak, which at nearly 27,000 feet (8,000 meters) is Earth's sixth highest mountain. To boost tourism, the Nepalese government last year opened more than a hundred peaks in the region previously off-limits to foreign climbers.
