The debate over wolf reintroduction is not really about wolves and their potential to kill livestock, argues Wyoming journalist Dan Neal, who has covered wildlife issues since 1984. He points out that only 80 sheep and 5 cattlea far cry from the mass carnage predicted by ranchershave lost their lives to the Yellowstone wolves. (The animals owners were compensated by Defenders of Wildlife.) The real issue, Neal maintains, is who controls the West, especially its public lands.
