“The debate over wolf reintroduction is not really about wolves and their potential to kill livestock,” argues Wyoming journalist Dan Neal, who has covered wildlife issues since 1984. He points out that only 80 sheep and 5 cattle—a far cry from the mass carnage predicted by ranchers—have lost their lives to the Yellowstone wolves. (The animal’s owners were compensated by Defenders of Wildlife.) “The real issue,” Neal maintains, “is who controls the West, especially its public lands.”
