Steven Biel is the author of Down with the Old Canoe: A Cultural History of the Titanic Disaster and the forthcoming Titanica: The Disaster of the Century in Poetry, Song, and Prose. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, his interest in shipwrecks was first inspired by Gordon Lightfoot’s song, “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.” He has taught history, literature, American studies, and writing at Harvard and Brandeis.
