John G. Mitchell, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC’s senior assistant editor for the environment, is a veteran of more than 40 years in the journalistic trenches—newspaperman, science editor of a national newsweekly, book editor, longtime field editor for Audubon magazine, author of four volumes of personal narratives and reportage, and scores of magazine articles. Mr. Mitchell joined the staff of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC in 1994.
