A graduate of the University of Virginia, Lisa Moore LaRoe worked at U.S. News & World Report for 13 years. In 1992 she joined the editorial staff of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, where she writes picture captions, map supplements, and articles. She has contributed stories on the Aran Islands; a 300-year-old shipwreck of French explorer Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle; the Ozark Mountains; and Dutch ice-skating. For picture text and maps she has covered natural disasters, ancient Greece, the Titanic, beluga whales, Tyrannosaurus rex fossils, and much more. LaRoe lives in Bethesda, Maryland, with her husband and two young daughters.
