Explorer: Explorer is NGT's flagship documentary series. Explorer opens your eyes to unforgettable adventures, extraordinary stories and remarkable destinations. From life inside North Korea to gang life on the streets of America, from ancient mysteries to cutting-edge science Explorer takes you on a riveting journey to the front lines and tells the story from the inside. Premiering in 1985, it has won more than 125 Emmy Awards.
Specials and Events: NGT has been producing stand-alone specials since 1963. Our most prestigious productions, Specials address subject matter ranging from animal behavior and foreign cultures, to ancient civilizations and scientific breakthroughs.
Natural History: Our Natural History Unit produces the shows that most people think of when they hear National Geographic, exploring nature and wildlife and transporting viewers to the farthest reaches of the globe. Working with the world's most talented scientists and filmmakers, NHU strives to document the fantastic drama and beauty of the natural world.
Series: NGT Series include some of our most popular shows and personalities. From Brady Barr in Dangerous Encounters to Sean Riley in World's Toughest Fixes, our series strive to teach our audience about the world around them in new and entertaining ways.
Digital Studio: The newest addition to NGT, our Digital Studio is responsible for producing short-form content for nationalgeographic.com, as well as the other digital platforms and the National Geographic Channel.
Each intern will spend his or her time:
- Providing story development/research assistance for the production team by collecting information from various resources (including the library, on-site news collections, the Internet, journals, newspapers, books, magazines, and telephone interviews)
- Assisting in production and post-production for their unitthis could include travel coordination, equipment rental, expense reports, location permits, visas and passports, script transcription, screening, logging and dubbing tapes, and researching stock footage
- Providing some administrative support for the department staff. These duties will range from data entry to filing and photocopying
- Interns also attend and participate in several luncheons, meetings, and talks as part of the internship program
Each intern should have:
- Experience in and knowledge of film and/or television production and research
- Strong writing and research skills
- Internet research experience
- Penchant for or experience with cultural, historical, and/or scientific subject matter
- Strong computer skills
- Enthusiasm and resourcefulness
The Production Operations intern will spend his/her time rotating within the areas of Production Operations, Post Production, Rights and Clearances, Production, and Production Management. This internship will expose the candidate to the mechanics of production, from learning about equipment and the stock footage process to observing the day-to-day functions required for television production.
The Editorial Development intern will work closely with the Editorial Development Coordinator, Development Directors and EVP Editorial Development to gain insight into the development and production of programming for National Geographic Television. He or she will have the opportunity to research, write and submit a story proposal for review by National Geographic Television and Film as a possible segment for television. Past interns have also had the opportunity to work on local NGT productions.
The Graphics and Animation intern will gain valuable knowledge of and experience with compositing and 3-D for motion graphics; and all aspects of CG animation including modeling, setup, animation, texturing, lighting and rendering. Interns will be able to observe and assist the Art & Animation department by producing computer graphics for National Geographic-related productions.
Interns will use the following software to improve proficiency and skill: Maya, Photoshop, and After Effects. Experience in the mentioned software is preferred.
S&P occupies a unique role, insuring that National Geographic standards of factual accuracy and editorial integrity are met with every program that NGT produces. S&P staff work with script writers and film producers, as well as programming executives, to make sure that productions enhance the reputation the National Geographic brand has enjoyed for decades. This internship is designed to expose candidates to the fundamentals of the NGT S&P/Research process, and let them experience some of the work on a wide range of projects, including Feature Films, Video Gaming, Mission Programs, and Giant Screen films. Interns track down information, researching content, and putting together research packets for upcoming projects. The internship requires topline research skills, as well as written and oral communication abilities. No television production skills are required. The culmination of each intern's time with the department will be to complete the research for an entire show on their own.
