Con Ed buys some of its power from Hydro-Quebec, a sprawling series of hydroelectric dams that harness the power of the La Grande River in northern Quebec and Ontario. To satisfy the morning surge in demand, the spillways open up— letting more water rush through the turbines and generating the energy needed get power to customers.
