NYNEX reports over 32 million miles (51 million kilometers) of telecommunications wire under the streets of New York. The ease of installation, compared to the staggering costs of water or gas, make this number possible. A hybrid combining fiber-optic and coaxial cable has been developed and is in use. As we move closer to the much vaunted information superhighway its use will undoubtedly grow.
