3. FERTILIZER
Concentrated sludge collected from settling tanks is baked at
95°F (30°C) for three weeks in mammoth digester tanks,
some as high as 60 feet (18 meters). Bacteria at work during
this phase turns the sludge into a biodegradable, nearly inert
goo. Most of the sludge dries into pellets and is sold
as organic fertilizer.
