2.  WOOD PIPES
In the early days of New York City’s gas network, the mains were made of wood. This practice continued into the 1950s. Rich natural gas, first piped from the Gulf of Mexico in the 1950s, is drier than its manufactured predecessor, and the leaking wood mains were no longer suitable. Their replacement, brittle cast-iron pipes, are now giving way to plastic and steel.
