3. FIRST SUBWAY
The first unofficial subway was opened in 1870 by Scientific American
editor Alfred Ely Beach. By means of a large, powerful fan, subway cars
were blown through a tube at the rate of 10 miles (16 kilometers) an
hour. Beach installed an elaborate chandelier and grand piano to
furnish the waiting room. Despite his efforts, the subway went broke
in 1874.
