2.  ENGINEERING
The 63rd Street tunnel was created by scouring and blasting the bottom of the East River to create two pockets. Workers positioned huge steel tubes over the pockets and sank them. Divers guided the mammoth tubes into place. They were then filled with pressurized air and covered with 10 feet (3 meters) of rock to keep them in place.
