3.  DOWNTOWN DISCOVERIES
Part of lower Manhattan’s reclaimed land was created by sinking ships, then covering them. Another facet of neighborhood history emerged during a dig under Wall Street. Archaeologists found wooden spikes—perhaps remnants of the palisade that gave the street its name.
