I bounced across the desert on a camel, mingled with brightly dressed Fulani women at village markets, and plied the Niger River in a pirogue. These were only a handful of experiences I had traveling to Mali for a month in November 1996 on assignment for the digital magazine, Mungo Park. My trip to Mali was like an ongoing slide show. I was constantly awed by the beauty and diversity of the people, cultures, languages, and landscapes.
