Ilkka Uimonen: Faces of Afghanistan

Last Good-bye
Kabul, 1996

Wailing and weeping, a man prepares the body of his six-year-old nephew for burial. Standing in for the boy’s seriously wounded father, the uncle washed the boy’s body, tied his toes, and wrapped his head, as prescribed by Muslim custom. In a nearby house women prepared the body of a girl who died in the same shell attack.
