What is the Preserve Our Planet Film and PSA Contest?
The first annual Preserve Our Planet Film and PSA Contest gives college students the opportunity to produce a short film or public service announcement (PSA) around the theme "What You Do Counts." Films should creatively address how personal actions affect the planet. Entries can be short films or PSAs and should demonstrate green and conservation efforts in the application, creation, and submission of each project.
What is a PSA?
PSA stands for "public service announcement." Your PSA should be no longer than 30 seconds.
Who is eligible to enter the Preserve Our Planet Film and PSA Contest?
College students 18 or older.
When are entries due?
Submissions must be postmarked by February 22, 2008, and mailed to the Preserve Our Planet Film Festival and PSA Contest.

Why do I have to mail in all entry materials?
We must have your original signature on the entry forms. We do, however, encourage you to print double-sided if you can.
What is the prizing structure?
- A first-place winner will be selected in each category (short film and PSA) and receive a cash prize and a trip to Washington, D.C., in April 2008 to attend a world gathering of National Geographic explorers. The first-place winners will show their winning submissions to this exclusive audience prior to a National Geographic Channel world premiere.
- A second-place winner will be selected in each category (short film and PSA) via online voting and will receive a cash prize and a trip to Washington, D.C., in April 2008.
- First Place—Short Film: U.S. $5,000
- First Place—PSA: U.S. $3,000
- Second Place (Audience Favorite)—Short Film: U.S. $1,500
- Second Place (Audience Favorite)—PSA: U.S. $1,000
What is the world gathering of National Geographic explorers?
This is an annual gathering of National Geographic explorers-in-residence, emerging explorers, and fellows. The theme for 2008 is conservation.
Where else can my entry be seen?
A selection of winning and non-winning films and PSAs may also be featured on additional National Geographic Channel platforms, such as National Geographic Channel VOD, the Preserve Our Planet Film Festival Web site, and other platforms where appropriate.
When will winners be notified?
All winners will be notified by March 21, 2008.
How long should the short films and PSAs be?
Films should be no longer than five minutes and the PSAs no longer than 30 seconds.
What format should the films and PSAs be delivered in?
Entries should be submitted on a VHS or DVD and should conform to the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) specifications. Please retain a master copy of the submitted film and/or PSA.
Will submission materials be returned to entrants?
Entry materials will not be returned.
What needs to be submitted to show proof of student status?
Entrants must have a faculty sponsor sign section 2 of the entry form and include either a copy of a current year student ID or an official letter on school letterhead from the school registry office.
