Dirt
.
Dirt on covers and text pages should be removed carefully. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or vinyl erasers are generally recommended by conservators as good for hard-surfaced or hard-sized (coated) papers. They can be used in solid or grated form, but care must be taken that they are not used vigorously because they contain abrasives.

Rubber cement pick-ups, also known as natural rubber pick-ups or crepe erasers, are very useful for pressure-sensitive adhesive removal and removal of some other extraneous materials. Take care not to pull too hard on the snagged mess or the paper fibers will be disturbed.

Clean magazine covers with untreated dust rags or, if available, with a low suction vacuum cleaner. Avoid using grated eraser inside the magazine as it is difficult to get out of the gutter.
