Handling
.
Handling causes the most damage to individual magazines. Be especially careful when removing issues from the shelf. Never force them; allow enough room for your fingers on either side. When removing from a shelf, hold the spine and sides rather than pulling the head cap, which is weaker. Photocopying of any bound printed material can damage the spine. Be careful not to try to flatten your magazines if you put them on a copier (and beware of copyright violation!).

Personal etiquette should be exercised in the care of your collection. Avoid leaving your mark:

  • Never eat, drink or smoke in areas where NGMs are handled.
  • Put away NGMs you are not using.
  • Use gloves when handling rare NGMs.
  • Never force an issue onto or off the shelf.
  • Be cautiouswhen working with fragile copies. Watch for signs of damage
  • Keep your hands clean and dry; dirt can transfer from one volume to another, and hand lotions, finger-licking, and skin-rubbing can deposit damaging contaminants onto NGMs.

Do not attach paper tabs with repositionable adhesives (e.g., Post-it notes) to your rare and valuable issues. Repositionable adhesives can leave a residue on coated paper even after a short period. You can feel the adhesive with your finger, and it will pick up dirt as well as adhering to the adjacent page. This residue may be removed with a vinyl eraser, but it may leave a nearly imperceptible solvent residue which can affect the paper in time.
