Before Downstream

Downstream

Dams can sometimes protect homes downstream from disastrous floods. But dams can also prevent floodwaters from replenishing the soil downstream. In time, this can make farmers’ fields on the river’s floodplain less fertile—even barren.

Is renewing farmland more important than protecting a town? What things would you consider if you had to decide whether a dam might do more harm than good?
