Before Midstream

Rocks

Bluffs, or walls of stone, that rise along the banks of a river provide clues to the type of bedrock that lies under the water. Before construction begins, geologists must examine this bedrock for faults or cracks that could destroy a dam.

Would a town with businesses on its riverbanks be a good place to build a dam? What else should people consider when deciding where—or whether—to build a dam?
