Fishing

Fish and other creatures that live in rivers have adapted to the depth, flow, and temperature of water in their home. Some species fight the fast currents of midstream, while others huddle near rocks in calm shallows. The amount of debris in the water—such as leaves and mud—also affects their lives. If the river environment changes, some species will have to migrate elsewhere or perish. Other species will replace them—for better or worse.

What kinds of animals would you expect to find in different parts of a river? What animals need to live near rivers, and why?
