During Downstream

Erosion

A river will often drop much of the sediment it carries—silt, sand, and sometimes small pebbles—when its current slows down in the reservoir behind a dam. Stripped of its “load,” the river has more erosive ability downstream to wash away new sediment from its banks and bed.

How can erosion affect ecosystems downstream? What are some signs that erosion is occurring?
