Virtual Earth

As the surveyor's rod and chain give way to aerial surveys and satellite imagery, the frontiers of cartography expand in digital form—the making of a virtual earth.

Whether used for counting grizzly bears or tracking missiles, digital methods provide revolutionary tools for the mapping mission—to measure, classify, and describe the earth's surface, as well as creating geographies of pure imagination. In this section currently under development, we will be previewing visions of this virtual earth as features become available.

Rotating globes representing physical, political, and remote sensing views of the earth may be viewed in this animation.
