Books

Supporting the Societys diverse interests, the Library houses about
50,000 books on a wide variety of subjects. Geography, guidebooks, reference works, travel, history, general science, cartography, natural history, photography, and books of exploration and discovery are the focus.
The Librarys collection also includes valuable and limited editions of works such as
the 20 volumes of The North American Indian by Edward S. Curtis, volumes
from the famous illustrated India Orientalis by de Bry,
several editions of Ptolemys Geography, and accounts of polar
exploration. Of note are the works of polar pioneers Sir John Franklin,
Roald Amundsen, Robert E. Peary, and Robert F. Scott.
There are reference sets of National Geographic, Traveler, Adventure, and World magazines in the Reading Room. The Library has a complete set
of the NGS Newspaper Bulletins, the early School Bulletin, and other published
references relating to the Society. To purchase copies of NGS publications, check the National Geographic

Journals

The Library files more than 200 journal titles, including a complete set of
major geographical journals: Annals of the Association
of American Geographers, Canadian Geographical Journal, Journal of the Royal
Geographical Society, Geographical Review, Progress in Geography, Soviet Geography,
and journals of exploration and of polar regions: Arctic, Arctic & Alpine Research,
Expedition. Long runs of nature and science magazines (Audubon, Life
Magazine, International Wildlife, Nature, Science) as well as popular
magazines (Life, Look, The New Yorker, Time) are also on hand.

Maps

The Societys Map Library is not open to Society members or
to the public. However, selected maps can be purchased from the
National Geographic Store.
Photos & Films

The Societys film and image collections are not open to
Society members or to the public. Selected videos, educational films, and software
may be purchased from the National Geographic Store.
