About the NGS Publications Index

The NGS Publications Index includes broad subject indexing to magazines, books, films and videos, educational products, map products, interactive features, and newsletters produced by the Society. For full text of articles or books, you can purchase them in the National Geographic Store or visit your local library.

Magazines

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC (1888 to present): The flagship magazine of the National Geographic Society highlights the diversity of the world’s lands and its inhabitants through spectacular photography, personal narratives, and illustrative maps. The NGS Publications Index lets you search for articles, map supplements, and departments like Behind the Scenes, Editor Page, Flashback, Forum, Geographica, and On Assignment.  International editions are included in the NGS Publications Index.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELER (1984 to present): This award-winning travel magazine is packed with stories about vacation spots in the U.S., Canada, and beyond. It features lavish photography and practical advice on planning trips. International editions are indexed as well.

National Geographic Society Research & Exploration (1985 to 1994): This interdisciplinary, scholarly journal was dedicated to the work of physical, life, and social scientists on topics ranging from anthropology to zoology.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC WORLD (1975 to present): This award-winning magazine for children ages 8 to 14 features learning adventures about the things kids love: sports, science, animals, and what other children are doing. The Japanese edition of WORLD, launched in 1999, is included in the NGS Publications Index.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ADVENTURE (1999 to present): The newest National Geographic magazine highlights life on the edge, with features on mountain climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, underwater exploration, trekking, and more—plus practical advice on finding the right gear and the best tour companies.


Books

Books for adults (1917 to present): National Geographic publishes highly illustrated large-format and standard-format books and softcover guides on a range of topics, including archaeology, history, science, travel, wildlife, and the wilderness. International versions of our books are included in the NGS Publications Index.

Atlases (1898 to present): These include physical, political, and historical atlases created by the Society’s renowned cartographers.

Children’s Books (1970 to present): Our books for age ranges 4 to 8 and 9 and older cover geography, science, animals, nature, and historical fiction, and include a series of hand-assembled pop-up books and a collection of atlases for young people. International editions are noted in the NGS Publications Index.

National Geographic Society Research Reports (1890 to 1983): These reports summarized research supported by the Society, including the unearthing of Machu Picchu, treks to the North Pole, and the work of such scientists as Jane Goodall, the Leakey family, and Robert Ballard.

Films and Videos

Television specials and home videos (1966 to present): The videos are 59- to 90-minute color documentaries by world-famous filmmakers originally broadcast as a part of National Geographic’s award-winning television programming. Topics include adventure, exploration, and wildlife. (Note: EXPLORER television shows are not fully indexed).

Educational Films (1974 to present): These educational films complement curricula for grade levels K-12/adult. The films are 12- to 32-minute color and black-and-white videos in the areas of science, social studies, and geography.


Educational Products

The index includes listings for numerous items which have appeared in the annual school publishing catalog. In addition to the educational films noted above, there are CD-ROMs, curriculum kits (including Kids Network), posters, software, transparencies, videodiscs, and wall and desk maps.

Map Products

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC supplement maps (1889 to present, including painting supplements): From Alaska at the turn of the last century to the Balkans today, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine has published supplement maps covering all the geographic regions of the world, including ocean floors and outer space. Atlases (1898 to present): These include physical, political, and historical atlases created by the Society’s renowned cartographers.

Newsletters

National Geographic Society Connections (1996 to present): Mailed to members of the Grosvenor Council and other donors, the newsletter reports on the activities of the council, recent expeditions, personnel changes, and geography-outreach programs.
