Previously a U.S. National Monument, Great Sand Dunes includes the tallest dunes in North America, covering over 30 square miles (76 square kilometers). The park and preserve is bounded by some of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountains and populated by diverse animal and plant species in the alpine lakes, tundra, and ancient stands of spruce and pine.
