CTD: Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth-
Measurement Instrument

>> INSTRUMENTS: Tossed over the side of the ship, CTDs submerge and transmit data back to a computer onboard. Operated remotely, cylinders at the top of the device can capture water samples.

>> DATA: CTD measurements can tell researchers a lot. For example, salinity can be calculated from electrical conductivity and temperature. In turn, the density of seawater can be determined from salinity and temperature.
