THE WEST INDIES

Sighting Antigua in the West Indies marked the beginning of the final leg of the nine-week journey from Spain to Mexico, or New Spain, as it was then called. By this time boredom was the passengers’ chief hardship. Celebrations of Roman Catholic holy days—complete with music, dancing, charades, and mock bullfights—were welcome breaks from the routine.
