The pilots were proved to be disastrously wrong. Eight days later the Concepción ground into a shallow reef and sank. Timber was frantically ripped from the ship to make rafts, and in the final days, treasure was thrown onto the reef to provide a higher place to stand and to mark the site. Of the 500 passengers and crew, fewer than 200 survived.
