Passengers and crew pitched in to operate the pumps and bail water with buckets until the water level in the hold lowered to 2 feet (0.6 meter). When the storm ended, carpenters and caulkers repaired the ship. But most of the provisions were spoiled, and almost all the gunpowder was ruined, making the ship vulnerable to pirates. It was decided to sail to Puerto Rico to recover. Since the storm had destroyed the foresail, the Concepción hobbled southward with a jury-rigged sail.
