Brian Roberts  

Historian Brian Roberts has spent much of his career focused on the antebellum and Civil War eras. Brian is an associate professor of history at the University of Northern Iowa. He is the author of several publications on 19th-century American history, including his award-winning book American Alchemy: The California Gold Rush and Middle Class Culture. Currently, he is at work on a book about America’s popular culture during the Civil War era, focusing on its music, art, and literature as well as the lives of ordinary Americans.

Journey from Charleston, S.C. to Alexandria, VA aboard the comfortable and intimate Nantucket Clipper. Explore important historic sites of the Civil War from Fort Sumter to the battlefields of Gettysburg and Manassas. Embark the M.V. Nantucket Clipper.

May 2 Charleston
This morning, take a walking tour of Charleston’s historic district, and pass by the colorful houses of the waterfront Battery. Later, visit Fort Sumter, site of the first shots of the Civil War, or picturesque Middleton Place plantation along the banks of the Ashley River.

May 3 Charleston/Wilmington, North Carolina
Cruise the scenic Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, passing by gracious antebellum mansions lining the shore.

May 4 Wilmington
Explore Bellamy Mansion, commandeered as headquarters for the Federal army, and Fort Fisher, the last major stronghold of the Confederacy.

May 5 Wilmington/Norfolk, Virginia
Continue traveling up the Intracoastal Waterway and enjoy a talk by our expert.

May 6 Norfolk/Williamsburg
Arrive in Norfolk, an important port during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Travel to Colonial Williamsburg for a specially arranged private tour and experience what life was like in 18th-century America.

A fife and drum corps welcomes us in Richmond. Spend the day exploring several museums with extensive collections relating to the Confederacy, then visit the Richmond National Battlefield Park.

Sail up the historic James River into the beautiful Chesapeake Bay.

May 9 Baltimore/Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Drive from Baltimore for an all-day excursion to Gettysburg, the best known battlefield of the Civil War.

May 10 Alexandria, Virginia/Washington, D.C.
Sail up the Potomac River past George Washington’s Mount Vernon to historic Old Town Alexandria. Following our farewell dinner, take a nighttime tour of Washington’s monuments.

Travel through the Virginia countryside to visit the battlefields at Harper’s Ferry and Manassas. Later, attend a private reception at the National Geographic Society.

  ABOUT THE M.V. NANTUCKET CLIPPER

M.V. <i>Nantucket Clipper</i> The yachtlike Nantucket Clipper carries 100 passengers. Staterooms are all outside and fully air-conditioned, with lower beds and private baths. The spacious observation lounge and distinctive dining room are window-lined, allowing a view of the passing scenery.
