Mark Thiessen  

Photographer Mark Thiessen's images have been published in National Geographic magazine, National Geographic Traveler, and National Geographic Adventure. His most recent assignment for National Geographic magazine, "Search for Other Earths," was shot entirely digital. Mark will lead the September 25, 2005 (digital-only) workshop.

 

BOB SACHA

Bob Sacha  

Bob Sacha is an award-winning photojournalist who has produced more than a dozen articles for National Geographic, including three stories that garnered Picture of the Year Awards. Bob began his career at Life magazine and regularly shoots for Fortune, Time, and Islands magazines. Bob will lead the October 2, 2005 (film and digital) workshop.

 

JOEL SARTORE

Joel Sartore  

Photographer Joel Sartore has produced 17 articles for National Geographic magazine, focusing on endangered species and land use issues. He also wrote the Society book The Company We Keep, America’s Endangered Species. A Pulitzer finalist, Joel has appeared on NPR, CBS, and National Geographic Explorer. Joel will lead the March 12, 2006 (digital-only) workshop.

 

GORDON WILTSIE

Gordon Wiltsie  

Adventure photographer Gordon Wiltsie, a regular contributor to National Geographic magazine, climbed the Andes to photograph Inca mummies, lived with a nomadic tribe in Mongolia, and photographed Shipton’s lost arch in western China. He is an entertaining storyteller and teacher of photography. Gordon will lead the July 16, 2006 (digital-only) workshop.

 

JOE MCNALLY

Joe McNally  

Joe McNally recently produced the first all-digitally photographed article for National Geographic magazine, "The Future of Flying." Described by American Photo magazine as perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today. Joe’s clients include Sports Illustrated, ESPN Magazine, and New York magazine. Joe will lead the July 23, 2006 (digital-only) workshop.

 

ROBB KENDRICK

Robb Kendrick  

Robb Kendrick has photographed 12 stories for National Geographic magazine in the past decade. An enthusiastic and versatile photographer, Robb utilizes the latest digital technology plus historic processing such as collodion tintypes. Robb’s assignments have ranged from Qatar to the Himalaya and from perfume to sumo wrestling. Robb will lead the September 24, 2006 (film and digital) workshop.

 

BOB KRIST

Bob Krist  

Photographer Bob Krist has shot several articles for National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Traveler, where he is a contributing editor. His how-to book on travel photography, Spirit of Place: The Art of the Traveling Photographer, was hailed by American Photo magazine as "simply the best book about travel photography we’ve ever read." Bob will lead the October 1, 2006 (digital-only) workshop.

Photography Workshops: <i>On Assignment in Santa Fe</i>  
Improve your photographic skills with guidance from the world’s best photographers on a National Geographic On Assignment Photography Workshop. Learn how to take National Geographic–quality photographs through critiques of your images, examples of the instructor’s work, and expert guidance on field trips.

Daily critique sessions, assignments, and location shoots are designed to help you learn to create great photographs. Workshops are geared for digital and film photographers, except if specifically noted as digital only.

Digital only workshops closely follow the same itinerary as our other workshops, with additional instruction on downloading, saving, organizing, and archiving images, and cropping, sizing, and manipulating images on the computer. All digital photographers need to bring their own SLR digital camera, laptop computer, and editing software.
  ITINERARY: 7 DAYS

Day 1
Arrive in Santa Fe and check into the historic Hotel St. Francis. Gather for a reception and welcome dinner with your instructors.

Day 2
This morning, learn how images for a National Geographic magazine article are conceived, photographed, and selected. After lunch, go out on your first assignment photographing around Santa Fe. Enjoy a presentation by our photographer, who will show selected work and discuss photographic technique and philosophy.

Day 3
The day begins with an early morning photo shoot, then a critique of images from the previous day. Later, photograph the landscapes that inspired painter Georgia O’Keeffe: Rio Chama Valley, Cerro Pedernal table mountain, and Ghost Ranch.

Day 4
Go on a photo shoot to a re-created Old West town, complete with a saloon, a sheriff’s office, and a jail. This evening, gather for a slide presentation by the instructors.

Day 5
Travel north on the High Road to Taos through historic Hispanic villages with views of the badlands and spectacular Sangre de Cristo peaks. Visit Chimayo and the San Francisco de Asis church in Ranchos de Taos. There will be some time to explore Taos on your own before returning to Santa Fe.

Day 6
Start with a morning photography session. After critiques, go on assignment along colorful Canyon Road. This evening, gather for a reception, dinner, and the “best of the week” slide show.

Day 7
After breakfast, gather for critiques and a final recap of the week with your instructors. Theworkshop ends at noon.

  ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Photography Workshops The National Geographic Photography Workshops are geared for amateur and serious photographers who want to learn the techniques used to capture and select the amazing images for National Geographic’s books and magazines.

Price includes workshop tuition, accommodations, services of the National Geographic instructor and one or more other instructors, meals as indicated in the itinerary, model and location fees, and local transportation.

Film shooters add $125 for processing ten rolls of E-6 transparency film.

Prior to the workshop, you’ll receive a letter from your instructors with suggestions on lenses, film, and equipment.

The workshops are limited to 25 participants.
