MULTIMEDIA

Doubilet estimates he has spent more than half of his life underwater. This is probably not a gross overstatement. Since taking his first underwater photograph with a Brownie Hawkeye camera sealed in a plastic bag off the coast of his native New Jersey, Doubilet has been hooked.

Considered the leading underwater photographer in the world, Doubilet has introduced a generation of readers to the mysteries and wonders of the deep. Exploring remote atolls, barrier reefs, and exotic marine life, he has shot over 60 stories for National Geographic and has published numerous books.

Many of his images are prized for their scientific value as much as their aesthetic beauty. Endowed with a keen, dry sense of humor and the ability to speak poetically about his subjects, Doubilet is an audience favorite.

Why Are We Starving our Oceans?
For every U.S. dollar spent on space exploration, only 20 cents is spent on studying our oceans, according to Doubilet. He says our priorities must change if we are to preserve the vast biodiversity, cultural traditions, and food sources that rely upon the health of our waters.

The Pacific War, Underwater
Doubilet pays tribute to what remains in World War II's watery graves, from Pearl Harbor to New Guinea.

Africa's Deep Secret: Beneath the Okavango Delta

Journey Through Coral Edens
Join David as he swims through paradise: the coral reefs of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
