Whether it can be attributed to nature or nurture, Hillary's enthusiasm for adventure runs deep and wide. The son of Sir Edmund Hillary, one of the first two people known to have summited Everest, Peter has been drawn to high-altitude mountaineering, aviation, and polar exploration for as long as he can remember.

In 1977 Peter and his father traveled by boat from the mouth of the Ganges River in the Bay of Bengal to its source high in the Himalaya, where they made first ascents of Nar Parbat and Akash Parbat.

An adventurer in his own right, Peter has tackled over 30 mountaineering expeditions. His 1995 bid for K2 was a defining moment in his life—just a few hundred meters from the peak, in a raging blizzard, Peter trusted his intuition and turned back as the other seven climbers pressed on. That decision saved his life.

Peter is also the author of six books, including a children's book and his most recent work, In the Ghost Country: A Lifetime Spent on the Edge. Peter is an active member of the Himalayan Trust, the Australian Himalayan Foundation, and the Canadian Hillary Foundation, organizations founded to craft long-term solutions to problems that confront the Nepalese people who live at the foot of Everest.
