Marvin Meyer is co-chair of the Department of Religious Studies at Chapman University, in Orange County, California, where he is also a professor of Bible and Christian Studies. One of the foremost Gnostic scholars in the world, Meyer, a Coptologist, is well-versed in nine research languages and has a vast 34-year history of scientific and non-fiction publication, television and radio appearances, conference keynote addresses and panel discussions, including numerous panels about the symbolism in The Da Vinci Code.
Recent books include The Gospels of Mary: The Secret Tradition of Mary Magdalene, The Companion of Jesus (HarperCollins, 2004) and The Gnostic Gospels of Jesus: The Definitive Collection of Mystical Gospels and Secret Books about Jesus of Nazareth (HarperCollins, 2005).
Recently he played a guiding role on National Geographic's Codex Advisory Panel, assembled to translate the only known surviving copy of the Gospel of Judas, an ancient Coptic manuscript dating from the third or fourth century, which turned upside down previously believed truths about the relationship between Jesus and Judas, suggesting that Judas was actually Jesus' most trusted disciple and that he was acting at Jesus' request when he handed Jesus over to the authorities.
