The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival opens every year with a display of fireworks that are launched from behind the ice palace. In 2011, while the fireworks were exploding over the ice palace, a heavy snow was falling creating an ethereal light all around the ice palace. The Winter Carnival royalty is in the foreground watching the fireworks display.
