Has Tourism Changed Forever?
On September 11, as Traveler magazines October issue went to press, our staff was left to contemplate the aftermath of the sickening attack on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. Many of us lost friends and family members. The National Geographic Society lost close colleagues. And we all lost a sense that while terrorism often strikes somewhere else, it simply cant touch us here.
After the planes struck, our friends and staff in New York City and Washington, D.Cwhere were headquarteredbegan calling each other to make sure everyone was safe. Soon, it became clear that the terrorist attacks on the U.S. may have irrevocably changed the worlds tourism industry and, indeed, how Americans travelin fact, not just Americans but everyone.
- Will we travel less?
- Will we stick closer to home?
- What delays and inconveniences must we endure to ensure greater security in the air?
- What does this mean to a nation used to going where it wants, when it wants?
We dont yet have the answers. But we assure you that well try to find themand report what we learn in the magazine and on our Web site. As a start, wed like your input. Tell us how these attacks have changed your view of travel by e-mailing us at hmorgan@ngs.org.
