In the Next Print Edition

In October 1999, TRAVELER magazine published “50 Places of a Lifetime,” an issue that showcased worldwide destinations all curious travelers should see before they pack their last suitcase. This month we unveil a red-white-and-blue version of the concept with an issue devoted to America’s 50 must-see places. Our highlighted 50 Places are divided into five categories. Which places we picked is a surprise—see for yourself by picking up a copy of the October 2001 issue at your nearest bookstore or subscribe online. But for now, we offer a glimpse of the categories that define our special picks.

Urban Spaces: Places that have a defining character, a uniqueness, and an influence beyond their immediate borders

Wild Places: Great wilderness areas—the deserts, forests, swamplands, and mountains—that stir us and surprise us

Paradise Found: Places that are often remote but that shimmer in the mind as retreats of the first order

Country Unbound: Rural landscapes that are only gently touched by the hand of man

National Wonders: Small, contained spots—manmade or natural—that America cherishes
