In the January/February 2005 Issue

In Traveler's third annual photography issue, we look at how 19 compelling places have changed over the years by juxtaposing modern photographs with historical shots. These pictures reveal much about our changing society and the transformation of the landscapes of New York City, Las Vegas, Rome, Berlin, Egypt, Capetown, Nepal, Hong Kong, and other classic destinations. (The transformations are both astonishing and entertaining.) With each photograph we also offer detailed reports on trends and happenings during these eras.

This photography issue is also the perfect opportunity to showcase the winners of our 16th annual photo contest. For months we pored over the 14,296 photographs that were entered by amateur photographers throughout the world, choosing winners who captured the soul of some of the world's most spectacular places.
