In the May/June issue, photographer Brooks Walker captures the
essence of Helsinki, the energetic Finnish capital. Here, a
sampling of Walker’s work and travel-photography tips.
Photo Gallery & Photography Tips
Helsinki is a gem of a city thats about as photogenic as it gets,
says photographer Brooks Walker. On his ten-day assignment,
Walker was beguiled by the city’s classic Nordic beauties,
magnificent 20th-century architecture, and striking sense of design.
But while I was there it rained constantly, he says. So that was
a challenge because I had this potentially beautiful subject that I
somehow had to get in good light.
Despite a stream of dark days, Walker returned to New York with
a portfolio that illustrates layers of the Finnish culture. His camera
of choice was a Mamiya 6 range finder. He used Fujichrome 220
medium-format film for sharper printed images.
