In the May/June issue, we explore Alaska’s remote and vastly
beautiful Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in
Alaska. Meet the team that delivered the story, and browse a photo
essay that captures their experiences.
TRAVELER contributing editor Jeff Rennicke wrote vividly of
the trek. A former Gates guide and self-described wilderness
storyteller, Rennicke says returning to Gates was a reminder of
just how beautiful and how wild the place really is.
Photographer Beth Wald documented the group’s every hike, raft
trip, and campout. I seem to be drawn to wild, harsh places like
the Arctic, she says. Places where one’s sense of being alive is
heightened by extremes of landscape and weather, or by coming
across fresh grizzly tracks in the mud.
