In the September issue of TRAVELER, a group of hikers reunite to embark
on a fierce climb and reflect upon their 1979 thru-hiking days along the
Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Here, check out our online day-hikes guide that
profiles 22 sections along the A.T. Plus, see the very best links the Web has
to offer on hiking the famed trail.
The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) meanders through 14 states and follows a
2,167-mile (3,487-kilometer) course from Katahdin, Maine, to Springer
Mountain, Georgia. But you dont have to possess the tenacity of a thru-hiker to experience the beauty of the A.T. Many sections make excellent day
hikes.
To read about some of the very best, scroll down the map and click on a hike
(names are highlighted in blue with a triangle to show approximately where
the hike begins). Please note that if you do hit the trails, youll need a
guidebook and a detailed map; both can be ordered from the Appalachian
Trail Conference, www.atctrailstore.org/info.htm.
