After a lifetime of visiting exotic places, its hard to decide what single spot means the most to me. Perhaps I should nominate the great statues, called moai, on the flank of Rano Raraku volcano on Easter Island. Not because they are hard to get to, though they certainly are. But because of their extraordinary sense of mystery and quiet and spirits of long-ago workers toiling to carve and erect the giant figures that have stood for all these centuries.
