Geotravel Tips

Geotourism Opportunities in Honduras

Honduras is diversity: a beach-lined rugged north coast, a distinct Latino cuisine, Afro-Carib Garifuna culture, the wonders of the ancient Maya, rain forests and Moskitia Indians in the Rio Platano, waterfalls and white-water thrills, coral reefs off the Bay Islands, and wildlife from whale sharks to howler monkeys.  The famed Mayan ruin of Copan, a World Heritage Site, adjoins an equally evocative historic town.

The Lodge at Pico Bonito lies under Pico Bonito peak, which soars almost two miles above the Caribbean. This exclusive hotel pampers you in between your guided nature walks on well-maintained trails through the lush rain forest.

Hacienda San Lucas, an authentic ranch house where hundreds of candles substitute for  electricity, overlooks the Copan valley and offers a superb restaurant serving a centuries-old selection of local recipes. Traditional furnishings decorate the guest cottages. (tel + 504 651 4106)

Down in the colonial town of Copan Ruinas, check out the Enchanted Wings Nature Center, a working butterfly farm housed in a five-terrace greenhouse with a waterfall. (tel + 504 651 4133) Then join the locals at the lively café Carnitas N'ia Lola. (tel+ 504 651 4196)

Rinconcito Graciano, a simple restaurant in the colonial town of Gracias, serves pre-Columbian Lenca and Maya cuisine amid traditional earth-tone decor. You can also buy authentic vanilla-flavored cigars and indigenous Lenca pottery, baskets, and hammocks. (tel + 504 959 1563)

La Moskitia Ecoadventures, a locally owned outfitter, employs area guides who lead white-water rafting trips on the Cangrejal River, hiking in Pico Bonito National Park, and multiday expedition river trips into the heart of the Rio Platano Biosphere Reserve, another World Heritage Site.
