Geotravel Tips

What is Geotourism?

In 2001 National Geographic Traveler helped to introduce the new concept of geotourism, devised by senior editor Jonathan B. Tourtellot. Geotourism is defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents. For travelers, that means strong sense of place, no mass tourism crowds, and a chance to engage more deeply with the locale.

Geotourism has taken off. Three countries—Norway, Honduras, and Romania—have already signed a Geotourism Charter that lists principles for good destination stewardship and enriching travel experiences. More on geotourism >>

To give you an idea of what geotourism is, we've selected a few examples from each of the three countries. These are places and businesses worthy of your patronage. They fit the geotourism definition, and they'll give you a richer trip.
