12 Unknown Caribbean Islands

Barbuda

In Barbuda you can wander loamy, sometimes pink-hued beaches, and snorkel. But like sister islands Bermuda and Barbados, Barbuda's accommodations are pricey. To cut costs, take a day-trip to Barbuda instead of staying there overnight.

Activities

Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Hire a boat from Codrington to reach the sanctuary of 170 species of birds, including pelicans, kingfishers, and tropical
mockingbirds. Outfitter: Mcarthur Nedd offers day trips by sea taxi. Details: from $60 per person, including a tour of the bird sanctuary, a visit to historical sites, and a stop at the beach; +1 268 460 0059.

Day-Trip
From Antigua, Barbuda is just a short ferry ride away. Outfitter: Antigua-based Barbuda Express offers round trip excursions, which feature guided tours to sites such as Frigate Bird Sanctuary and two hours of sunbathing on the beach. Details: from $120 per person, including ferry service, tours, and lunch; +1 268 764 2291.

Hotels and Restaurants

Coco Point Lodge
Surrounded by the sea, cottages rest on 165 acres of private beach. Details: from $900 to $1,430, including meals, drinks, fishing, watersports, laundry service, and private flights from Antigua; +1 268 462 3816.

The Beach House
Built in the 1920s for comedic actor Slim Summerville, this beach retreat makes for a soothing place to unwind with its airy decor and terraces overlooking the sea. Details: closed from October to November 15; from $565 to $1,260; +1 631 537 1352 or 888 776 0333 (U.S. and Canada).

Editor's note: Hotel rates are European Plan (EP), meaning meals aren't included, unless otherwise noted; rates reflect a nightly fee unless otherwise noted. Tax and service charges are not included. Rates are subject to change during promotions and peak seasons. Restaurant prices are for an average three-course dinner, nonalcoholic drink, tax, and tip.
