12 Unknown Caribbean Islands

Montserrat

After 300 years of inactivity, the Soufriere Hills Volcano buried Montserrat's capital. But locals and travelers are back (in smaller numbers), unable to resist the sparkling black sand beaches, lush hiking trails, and legendary volcano viewings.

Activities

Volcano Tours
A glowing lava dome atop Soufriere Hills—half its original size due to a mammoth explosion in 2003—towers above the island. Local taxis and buses can take you to prime viewpoints such as Jack Boy Hill for $20 to $100 per trip (depending on your route). Or you can rent a car to explore on your own—just be sure to respect government-designated safe zones. Helicopter charters offer a bird's eye view of the steaming crater.
Outfitter: Caribbean Helicopters offer 45-minute flights. Details: from $200.

Hiking
The Centre Hills Trail winds through a rain forest with 34 species of birds, including the endangered Montserrat Oriole.
Outfitter: Philemon "Mappie" Murrain at the Montserrat National Trust leads two-hour hikes on a variety of trails. Details: from $15 to $25 per person, depending on group size; +1 664 491 3086.

Rendezvous Bay
To reach the beach, hike the steep trail or take the short boat ride from Little Bay.
Outfitter: Carlton O'Garrow can arrange boat trips to the bay with guided sightseeing options. Details: from $15 to $20 (tour), including beverages; add $50 for sightseeing tours; +1 664 491 8902.

Hotels

Vue Pointe Hotel
Comfy rooms overlook a black-sand beach and the still-steaming dome of Soufriere Hills. Details: from $80 to $120; +1 664 491 5210.

Tropical Mansion Suites
Located in the newly developed northern part of the island, the suites are clean and bright, though unremarkable. Details: from $89 to $185, including continental breakfast; +1 664 491 8767.

Restaurants

Ziggy's
Though in a simple marquee in the foothills, Ziggy's was up-market enough to please Prince Andrew during his recent visit. Try the chocolate "sludge," a to-die-for dessert. Details: open by reservation only; $100; +1 664 491 8282.

Jumping Jack's
Try the tuna filet cooked in Chilean sauvignon blanc. Details: open Wednesday through Sunday (lunch only), except for Friday when dinner is also served; $13; +1 664 491 5645.

Editor's note: Hotel rates are European Plan (EP), no meals, unless otherwise indicated. Tax and service charges are not included. Rates are subject to change during promotions and peak seasons. Restaurant prices are for an average three-course dinner, nonalcoholic drink, tax, and tip.
